Underground cable jointers create and maintain the infrastructure of our business. They protect the integrity of our power supplies by making and repairing joins in power cables installed in underground pipes and trenches, as well as preparing cable terminations for electrical equipment and overhead lines.
The role is challenging and requires good hand skills and workmanship. While cable jointers are part of a team, they often work independently. This can be in enclosed spaces, deep excavations or at height. They’re often exposed to oil compounds and need to handle hot substances. Cable systems can be up to 11kV.
Given the hazardous environment, cable jointers are expected to follow work safety practices, to control environmental impacts and comply with relevant laws. Every day, they need to identify and eliminate hazards and potentially dangerous situations.
Standard duties
Some examples of the work a cable jointer does include:
- Safety audits, risk assessments and hazard management
- Installing and maintaining oil/gas pressurisation equipment including oil tanks, pressure monitoring, gas cubicles, cylinders, gas leak detection and recording equipment
- Maintaining oil and gas pressure cable systems within operational limits, and investigating, locating and repairing leaks
- Directing the work team by setting high work standards and coaching or training team members to achieve them
- Helping to maintain and protect tools, plant and vehicles at the worksite.
What’s required for this role?
- Formal trade qualifications (preferred)
- Certificate of Competency as an Underground Cable Jointer and/or Electrical Fitter Mechanic
- Current Queensland driver’s licence (or the ability to get one).
