Ergon Energy celebrates a decade of Safety Heroes
Thousands of Queensland primary school students have graduated from the lifesaving Safety Heroes program since it was rolled out by Ergon Energy Network and Energex ten years ago.
Kicking off the 10th birthday celebrations at Garbutt State School during Electrical Safety Week, Ergon’s Senior Community Engagement Advisor Kate Austin said the current crop of Safety Heroes would be well-equipped for the electrification of everything.
“A lot has changed in the decade since we launched Safety Heroes, including rapid advances in technology, the number and type of electrical appliances in Queensland homes, the frequency of severe weather events, and a global pandemic that normalised remote learning.
“We have adapted the Safety Heroes program over the years, and it will continue to evolve as we teach future generations how electricity works and how to stay safe around it,” Ms Austin said.
The new and improved Safety Heroes mobile gaming app, Scratch coding projects and simple circuit kits reflect the critical role technology plays in learning today.
Garbutt State School Principal Jackie Guiney said the interactive Safety Heroes program was a hit with students and teachers.
“We use technology in the classroom and our students are hands-on learners, so I think these teaching tools just draw the kids in more. It makes them proud of what they can do and then they go and show the little ones what they’ve learnt.
“I think it’s a life skill, knowing what’s happening around you with electricity,” she said.
This year 97% of Queensland primary schools will be celebrating a decade of Safety Heroes.
“The kids’ eyes light up, they enjoy the visit from the Ergon crew because it’s something different and it’s also positive for the senior students to see that this is a career pathway they can take in life,” Ms Guiney said.
