The existing Turkinje Substation

Turkinje Substation rebuild

We’re investing in the electricity supply to the Atherton Tablelands with a major $14.2 million rebuild of the Turkinje Substation, and associated powerlines works.

This work also supports the upgrades already underway to the power supply to the Douglas Shire.

The Turkinje Substation, located on the Kennedy Highway just south of Mareeba, is being rebuilt in front of the existing substation. This investment will address both power reliability and safety risks associated with the age of the substation and support the growing the demand for electricity across the region.

The existing switching yard was established in the 1960s. It connects into Powerlink’s bulk supply substation, located along side Ergon’s substation, and through to the state’s 66kV transmission network.

The 132/66kV substation is critical to the future security of supply for around 24,000 customers. From the Turkinje Substation, the distribution powerlines energise Ergon’s substations in Mareeba, Atherton, Dimbulah, Ravenshoe and Mount Garnet, as well as the Mount Molloy Substation and, currently, the Mossman Substation.

Customers will be notified by mail of any associated planned outages and can register for free SMS and email updates on our Self Service portal.

Thanks for your understanding while we work to improve the reliability, security and safety of your electricity supply.
